Care & Repair
Explore our advice for a long-lasting wardrobe – easy tips and tricks that can help you extend the life of your favourite garments.
1. Storing
Storing your garments correctly and keeping their unique structure in mind can help to prevent them from losing shape or becoming damaged.
Knitwear
Lay your sweaters flat to dry, and store them by folding and stacking neatly. This helps to avoid stretching and sleeve marks.
Shirts
Shirts and blouses are best kept in a closet on wooden hangers. Hanging helps the fabric stay fresh and wrinkle-free.
Trousers
Tailored trousers should be hung on a trouser hanger, folded along the crease (rather than the seam). This helps to preserve the crease and prevent wrinkles.
2. Mending and Maintaining
Maintaining the quality of your garments is key to making sure they last, and mending is a simple way to avoid replacing them. The Filippa K customer care teams in store and online are trained to offer advice on the best ways to care for your favourite pieces.
Pilling
Many natural fibres, particularly in knitwear, will start to pill over time. This is a normal process and can be easily removed by hand or with a device. We recommend using a fabric shaver gently across the surface of the garment, and a pocket brush to smooth out the surface.
Spot Cleaning
Treating a stain right away can help prolong the time between a garment’s washes. Some garments, such as leather accessories and wool outerwear, are always best treated by spot cleaning rather than washing. Check your garment’s care label or get in touch for advice.
Steaming and Ironing
Steaming your garment is an easy way to remove wrinkles and refresh between washes. Some pieces can also be ironed for a more crisp result, be sure to always check the care label for specific ironing instructions.
Tailoring
Having a close relationship with a reliable tailoring is helpful when you need to repair garments, or have a piece altered to improve its fit. Speak to your nearest Filippa K store staff if you’d like advice on local tailors.
Dry Cleaning
Just like tailoring, finding a trusted dry cleaner is important for maintaining the quality of your wardrobe. Our store staff can help with advice on local dry cleaners.
Small Repairs
While a tailor can help with garment repairs, many small fixes such as a missing button or seam rip can be easily mended at home with a sewing kit. Get in touch if you would like advice about a small repair on your Filippa K garment.
Protecting Materials
Stretch fabrics, like elastane and Lycra, are sensitive to heat. You can protect these garments by placing a damp cloth in-between when ironing, and washing them inside out in a cold temperature. With leather garments and accessories, you may want to apply a leather protectant before use. Always check the care label before treating any piece.
3. Washing and Drying
Being thoughtful about the ways you wash and dry clothing is a simple way to make sure they last. Always read the care label, and try not to wash garments more than is necessary.
Wash at Low temperature
Always wash your garments at the lowest temperature possible, particularly with delicate items.
Wash on a Low cycle
The shortest wash cycle is typically enough to ensure your garment is clean, and it’s a simple way to save water.
Choose a Natural Liquid Rinse
Liquid detergents dissolve better than powders, and are the most sensitive option for hand or machine washing.
Use a Wash Bag
For fine materials like silk, viscose, wool and TENCEL™ it’s helpful to turn them inside out and place them in a wash bag before washing. This helps protect the material, and some wash bags also reduce the amount of microplastics that end up in the ocean.
Wash Less Often
Airing a garment outside during warmer months gives it a just-washed feeling, or you can use a steamer for a quick refresh.
4. A Circular Mindset
There are many ways to extend the life of a garment, once you decide that you no longer want to keep it. By approaching our wardrobes with a circular mindset – extending the life of clothing, passing it on, and recycling or repurposing when possible, we can work towards a larger movement of more mindful consumption.
Filippa K Collect
Our Collect program has been in place since 2015, taking back garments to give them a second life and ensure they are taken care of responsibly. If you live near a Filippa K store, you’re welcome to bring in unwanted Filippa K garments for credit towards your next purchase with us.
Reselling
Reselling your garments is a great way to give them a new home – there are many resale providers available through stores, websites and apps, depending on your location. If you’re in Sweden, you can resell through our own platform, Filippa K Preowned.
Repurposing
Finding a new purpose for your garment’s material is a creative solution for unwanted clothing. You can upcycle fabric by using it as gift wrap (rather than buying new materials). Another option is changing the way you style your pieces – for example, taking a damaged sweater and tying it around your shoulders as a scarf.
Recycling
Some garments are designed to be responsibly recycled. Check the garment’s label, or contact our team to find out if this is an option.
Donation
Donating your unwanted clothing to local charities and thrift stores is a simple way to clean out your wardrobe while giving your pieces a second life.
