1. STORING
By storing garments properly and keeping their unique structure in mind, you can prevent them from losing shape or becoming damaged.
KNITWEAR
Lay your sweaters flat to dry, and store by folding and stacking neatly. This helps to avoid stretching and sleeve marks.
SHIRTS
Shirts and blouses are best kept in a closet on wooden hangers. Hanging helps the fabric stay fresh and wrinkle-free.
TROUSERS
Tailored trousers should be hung on a trouser hanger, folded along the crease (rather than the seam). This helps to preserve the crease and prevent wrinkles.
2. MENDING AND MAINTAINING
Maintaining your clothing is the key to making them last, and mending is a simple way to avoid replacing them. The Filippa K customer care teams in store and online are trained to offer advice on getting the most out of your favourite pieces.
TAILORING
Having a close relationship with a reliable tailoring is helpful when you need to repair garments, or have a piece altered to improve its fit. Our stores has a list of recommended tailors based on your nearest Filippa K location.
DRY CLEANING
Finding a trusted dry cleaner is important when considering the maintenance of your garments. Our Stores Page has a list of recommended dry cleaners based on your nearest Filippa K location.
STEAMING AND IRONING
Steaming your garment is an easy way to remove wrinkles and give it a refresh – we love this handheld steamer from Steamery. Some pieces can also be ironed, be sure to check the care label for specific ironing instructions.
PILLING
Many natural fibres, particularly in knitwear, will start to pill over time. This is a normal process and can be easily removed by hand or with a device. We recommend using a fabric shaver gently across the surface of the garment, and a pocket brush to smooth out the surface.
SPOT CLEANING
Treating a stain directly as soon as it occurs can help prolong the time between a garment’s washes. Some garments, such as leather accessories and wool outerwear, are always best treated by spot cleaning rather than washing. Check your garment’s care label or contact our team for advice.
SMALL REPAIRS
While a tailor can help with garment repairs, many small fixes such as a missing button or seam rip can be easily mended at home with a sewing kit. If you would like some advice, please contact our customer care team.
PROTECTING THE MATERIAL
Stretch fibres such as elastane and Lycra are sensitive to heat. Protect these garments by placing a damp cloth in-between when ironing, washing them inside out in a cold temperature.
3. WASHING AND DRYING
Being thoughtful about the ways you wash and dry clothing is an easy step towards more sustainable living, as well as prolonging the life of your garments. Always read the care label and try not to wash garments more than is necessary.
WASH AT A LOW TEMPERATURE
Always wash your garments at the lowest temperature possible, particularly with delicate items.
WASH ON A LOW CYCLE
The shortest wash cycle is typically enough to ensure your garment is clean, and it’s a simple way to save water.
CHOOSE A NATURAL LIQUID RINSE
Liquid detergents dissolve better than powders and are the most sensitive option for hand or machine washing. We recommend these biodegradable options: the Delicate Wash for everyday garments, and the Sport Wash for activewear.
USE A WASH BAG
For fine materials such as silk, viscose, wool and Tencel™ it’s helpful to use a specially designed wash bag and turn the garment inside out. These Guppy Friend bags are designed to reduce microfibre shedding from synthetic materials (keeping plastics from going into the ocean), and they prevent abrasion during washing, which can lead to pilling.
WASH LESS OFTEN
Airing a garment outside during warmer months is often enough to regain a fresh feeling. You can also use a garment refresher spray in between washes, like this Clothing & Shoe Mist.
4. A CIRCULAR MINDSET
There are many ways to extend the life of your garment once you no longer wish to keep it. Maintaining a circular mindset when it comes to our wardrobe helps to encourage a larger movement of more mindful consumption.
FILIPPA K PREOWNED
Preowned is our online marketplace where you can sell and shop second hand Filippa K pieces. List your garments for cash or store credit, or discover the unique pieces from past and current seasons.
RECYCLING
Some garments are designed to be recycled. Check the garment’s label or contact our team to find out if this is an option.
DONATION
Local charities and thrift stores are always in need of donations – bring your clothing to your nearest location to give it a second life.
REPURPOSING
Finding a new purpose for your garment’s material is a creative solution for unwanted clothing. One of our favourite ways to upcycle fabric is by using it as gift wrap (as typical wrapping options are less sustainable).
